We all know the pinnacle will be held here in Brockville on June 7-8-9. Ron, Jack, Randy and the crew have been working for two years to prep for this event.Their hard work will come to fruition on that weekend.

I will feature some of the committee’s work along with some local athletes. I will also give you the opportunity to follow along as we trace the successes of two leagues; here at home , the Leeds and Grenville schools as they work their way thru LGSSAA, EOSSAA and East Regionals.

I will also try to keep everyone updated on the athletes from the South Region of the Toronto District (TDSSAA) as they progress towards OFSSAA on June 7-8-9.

By RON SMITH , SPORTS EDITOR
From the R&T Article here

Records are made to be broken.

However, these two records were among the oldest in Leeds and Grenville.

Two long-standing senior hurdles records fell by the wayside in the annual Leeds and Grenville high school track and field championships at TISS on Wednesday. TISS Pirates' Rachel Bennett and Ryan Harper put themselves into the LGSSAA record books by knocking out marks that had been established in 1983 and 1978.

Bennett erased the 1983 record of Pirates' Pam Prophet with her time of 1:08.66 in the senior girls 400-metre hurdles. Prophet's mark was 1:10.5. Harper knocked out the 1978 record of South Grenville Giants' Brian Keller of 58.7 in the senior boys 400-metre hurdles. Harper's record time was 58.15 seconds,

"When I heard it was from 1983, I thought 'wow', that's impressive. I'm really proud," said Bennett after her victory.

And on the same day, Pam, who now is a volunteer coach at Eastern Commerce High School in Toronto, had the opportunity to coach her daughters to successes in the their TDSSAA region meet. Sami qualified in the 1500m and Kate won the Midget LJ.

Today Kate finished 2nd in the TJ and Sami won the senior girls 800m.

Meanwhile here in Brockville, an injured Brandon had to throw from stationary standing position but still managed to win LGSSA JR Boys ShotPut and come 2nd in Discus.

So all three advance to the next meet, aiming for OFSAA on June 7-8-9 here in Brockville.

Penticton scores a couple of late goals (one in the last minute) to win the Royal Bank Cup!

Jason Tatarnic's Slammers were oh so close!

Nepean Riders must be upset as they were so close to winning the Fred Page Cup over Woodstock.

Cornwall Colts can't feel any better as they had Nepean on the ropes and couldn't finish them off!

And the same can be said for Pembroke Lumber kings, they had Nepean down as well!

This all speaks well for CCHL, they have arrived!

I am hoping you watched at least some of the RBC games on FASTHockey. Hockey Canada supplied them free of charge. They were a pleasure to watch from a technical point of view. Pretty darn nice. Your CCHL is considering switching (no pun intended) to FASTHockey next season.

And did the FASTHockey broadcast ever look good on my Samsung Tablet with it’s Android operating system. Silverlight doesn’t run on Apple iOS nor Android.

I had a great time at the 20th M & M Charity BBQ. Sold a lot of burgers and dogs, and hopefully raised a lot of money fro Crohn’s disease research. Rebecca got her first taste of working with volunteers, and is now much better prepared for next year. I got to know Kevin ( a KPMG confrere of Rebecca’s) a little bit and it helped pass the time.

I was back to Kingston Sunday (who would ever buy a corner lot?). In those new subdivisions in Kingston the lot sizes are minute, except for some of the corner lots. And you can guess who has one. Rebecca was not alone in what appeared to be a dandelion grow area. It was a sea of yellow. While I mowed the lawn, Colleen (great Mother’s day) was down on her hands and knees digging up those damdelions!

Rebecca and I treated Colleen to a tasteful Mother’s Day dinner at Greek Islands on Bath Road. We had a super waitress, knowledgeable and friendly which always makes the meal more enjoyable and the bill more tolerable. I just have to mention, that Saganaki is by far one of the best tasting foods in the world. No discussion of health issues here, please.

Jordan is still struggling with the edict by Oswego State about athletes and International scholarships. Tears my heart to see what this is doing to him.

As a converted Expo fan, we keep hoping the Blue Jays, and a couple of their big hitters, are going to get their act together on a regular basis and do some serious damage in the AL East.

BENIK SCORES WINNER AS VEES FINALLY EARN FIRST WIN AT RBC CUP

HUMBOLDT, Sask. – Joey Benik scored the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Penticton Vees earned their first win of the 2012 RBC Cup with a 2-1 victory over the Woodstock Slammers on Tuesday night.

Media Gallery | Buy photos at HockeyCanadaImages.ca

The win stopped Penticton’s first two-game losing streak of the year and kept the Vees from becoming the first Pacific Region team to start the National Junior A Championship 0-3 since the Vernon Vipers in 1999 (although the Vipers ended up winning the national title).

Benik tipped a Mike Reilly point shot past Woodstock goaltender Matt Murphy to give Penticton (1-2) a couple of firsts at this year’s tournament: Benik’s goal was the first scored on the power play by the Vees, and gave them their first lead.

Ryan Reilly scored the other goal for the Vees, who entered the national championship as the CJHL’s top-ranked team, but were the last in the five-team field without a victory before Tuesday night, a shocking turn of events considering Penticton won 70 of 80 regular season and playoff games this season.

Andrew Langan had the lone goal for Woodstock (1-2), giving the Slammers a short-lived 1-0 lead, as Reilly tied it just 80 seconds after Langan’s icebreaker. Woodstock couldn’t build on the momentum from its Monday night win over Portage – it managed only 21 shots on Vees netminder Michael Garteig, and was outshot 41-21.

The Penticton win leaves a four-way log jam for second place, with the Vees, Slammers and Soo Thunderbirds all sitting at 1-2, while Portage is 1-1 after four days of action.

The Vees will look to clinch a berth in Saturday’s semifinals when they closes out their preliminary round on Wednesday night against Portage (7:30 p.m. MT), while Woodstock will try to book a Saturday spot of its own on Thursday afternoon against the Soo (3 p.m. MT).

No sirree, Crohn’s Disease doesn’t care. Back in 1996, after n exhaustive diagnosis routine, the team leader at CHEO spoke to Colleen and I. He said are you familiar with Crohn’s disease? We both replied, never heard of it! He then proceeded to ask if we watched Team Canada play the night before and we had noticed the winning goal was scored by Theo Fleury. He said Theo has Crohn’s Disease and so does your Rebecca.

The next ten years in Rebecca’s life were typical hell for a severe Crohn’s patient. They had their highlights and their lowlights. Month long stays in the hospital, irregular school attendance, impeded horse shows but including sitting in Wade Redden’s box for an emotional playoff game between the Sens and the Leafs and a week long trip to the equestrian Masters Cup in Calgary, courtesy of the Starlight Foundation.

Rebecca graduated from Queen’s School of Business in 2009 an was hired by KPMG to start in October of that year. And eerily similar to Matt Light’s story which follows, she was scheduled for surgery to remove 23” of her intestine, during a 5day hospital stay. As with Matt, severe complications and a near death event, extended that stay for two months. She missed a planned trip to Greece with Ali but did get out of the hospital in time to start her career with KPMG.

She has had a couple of hospital stays since and is still not Crohn’s free. So much for the average Joe, you can read Theo Fleury’s book, “Playing With Fire” or as a start just read the following newspaper article and view the short video.

Matt Light reveals battle with Crohn's

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- When members of the New England Patriots gathered at owner Robert Kraft's home to receive their Super Bowl rings in the summer of 2004, offensive lineman Matt Light couldn't make it. It wasn't by choice.

Light was fighting to stay alive, in the middle of a 30-day hospital stay.

"It was one of the darkest periods in my life," he recalled Monday.

“

The pain became so difficult that in the offseason it just paralyzed me. I'd hit the ground. You can't wake up. You can't sit down.

” -- Matt Light on his struggle with Crohn's disease

Had things unfolded according to plan, Light would have had 13 inches of his intestine removed, the intestine would have grown back, there would have been no complications and he would have been back on the field for the start of 2004 training camp.

But that's not the way it happened.

Instead, there were post-surgery complications. Light didn't eat for a month. His weight dropped from 315 pounds to 260, as his under-the-radar battle with Crohn's disease -- a bowel disease that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system -- was attacking him with force.

Balance of the story at ESPN Boston

And you can go to your local M&M store this Saturday for their BBQ fundraiser for Crohn’s. We’ll be there.
