Weekend Roundup

How much stock do you put in these early preseason games? I guess it might depend on how long the teams have been on the ice, how many players still left in camp and probably most relevant of all, which players are on the game sheet.

I am not a believer in courtesy games, as playing in them may impact on your eligibility for high school hockey among other things. And fans are anxious to see “the” team, not really the players who will not be there next week.

Now Pembroke iced a sheet full of new players but many of those are destined to remain with the club. The talk in the forum says that is not true of some of the lineups utilized in early games by the Raiders among other clubs.

Carleton Place has even gone so far as to have the dynamic PxP duo, out of the booth and behind the bench. The cast of the Todd’n’Toby Show, along with new comer Jamie Mayo have steered the Canadians ship on occasion this summer.

Now, having prefaced with all that, what about the Brockville Braves. A couple of very lopsided losses have disappointed the hometown fans. But we have to remember these are learning experiences, not only for the players (who might be making a quantum leap into Jr A) but for the coaches as well. They want to see if those players who were masters in the drills could convert this into game conditions, and vice versa. Some players are just not good practice players!

Now I was not in attendance at either game for the Braves, but from reports from folks who were there and of course the PointStreak gamesheets; it looks like there was only a sprinkling of players (from both teams) in Saturday night’s game. I think Hawk, Wardie and Gibby wanted to take a look at the goaltending, a couple of the new rearguards and the same for a few forward combinations. Most of the returning players were conspicuous by their absence.

Sunday night’s loss in Cornwall was a different story. Except perhaps for the second tender, Nathan Peters, they were all signed players, and the result was no better. At least from a fans point of view. Coaches are always watching and evaluating different aspects of the game than those of us deeply entrenched in the stands.

Many will be quick to point the finger at the goaltending but we know scoring 2 or 3 goals is not going to win you many games in his league. Another week of practice and we may well see a much improved performance next Friday night in Trenton. The two new tenders will now be going into that game knowing what to expect in a Junior A game. The coaches will have had the opportunity to assess and alter line combinations.

The team also unveiled their leadership selections. And we cannot agree more whole heartedly with the appointments of Chris Roll as Captain and his assistants, Kevin Karisits, Zach Todd and Haydon Hulton.

mattcookBrandon packed the bags on the weekend and headed off to the Saginaw training camp. The month before that was filled with rehab type skating with the boys at FineLine Conditioning. A very positive experience as daily we got to see top notch NCAA, NHL, AHL, KHL and OHL players on the ice. Here’s a photo on the last day of Brandon with Matt Cooke.

Last night he got to meet his billet family and fellow billet, veteran OHl defenceman Brandon Archibald.
